PARCC Celebrates Sojourner Truth’s Birthday

Peoples Anti-Racist Coordinating Committee celebrates the birthday of black freedom fighter, Sojourner Truth!

Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist and activist for African-American civil rights, women’s rights, and alcohol temperance.

Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826.

She became the first black woman to win a legal a case against a white man to win freedom and custody over her son in 1828.

Sojourner Truth played a pivotal role in recruiting African Americans into the Union effort in the Civil War against Slavery.

Truth was also instrumental in transporting slaves to freedom via her participation in the Underground Railroad.

Sojourner Truth will live in our hearts and minds forever as an inspiration in the struggle for equality and progress!
